We are only fooling ourselves when we think we can hide our sins from God. We may be able keep secrets from each other and make ourselves seem holy while we’re living against God’s will, but God sees us.
Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him?” says the Lord; “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord. – Jeremiah 23:24
Take, for instance, Achan in Joshua 7. The Israelites were sent to conquer a small country named Ai. Now the children of Israel, through the power of God, had already conquered Jericho, a fortified city with great walls. Ai was a much smaller country than Jericho. Ai defeated the Israelites so much so, they made them turn and run with fear. Joshua was baffled and he prayed to the Lord. God uncovered the sin of Achan and his family taking things from Jericho that were considered cursed by God and hid them under his tent.
Reading Joshua 7, we find Achan tried to hide what he did. He was successful hiding his act from Joshua and the Israelites, but unsuccessful in hiding it from God.
Proverbs 15:3 reminds us God is everywhere, seeing everything. It would be a blessing to us if we remember and understand that we can’t hide from God. Ecclesiastes 12:14 tells us He will bring every secret thing into judgment. He will never lower His standard to meet our human desires. He is watching us and desires us to live according to His will. It is important for us to come out of hiding and let God lead us to freedom.
