Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. – Colossians 3:12-13
Jesus commanded us to forgive others so that the Father in heaven would forgive us of our sins. If we don’t forgive others than He won’t forgive us (Matthew 6:14-16). And let’s face it, we all will need to be forgiven at the end of any given day. Peter asked Jesus how many times do we have to forgive and His was response was seventy times seven (Matthew 18:21-22).
People who live without a relationship with Christ see this as being weak, fearful or whatever name believers have been given when we do extraordinary things such as forgive someone who has hurt us so deeply. I must admit that I am faced with the same situation. I see someone daily, who constantly lies about everything, including lie on me, and have betrayed my family and me several times. And each time I have to forgive this person. To be honest, we may have gone past 490 times.
I know it’s hard and a lot of times we want to retaliate or lash out when someone hurts us. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:12 that what we’re experiencing isn’t about the person we struggle with, it’s about the raging spiritual war that’s going on. So we know the person doing things to us is being controlled by an evil spirit whose job is to get us out of the will of God.
The best way to combat this is through the power of being merciful, kind, humble, patient and forgiving. Like I said, I know it’s hard but here’s something to encourage us.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, forthey do not know what they do.”And they divided His garments and cast lots. – Luke 23:34
Jesus asked HIs Father in heaven to forgive the ones who beat Him, tortured Him and crucified Him. Whoever has done something against us didn’t do us anywhere near as bad as they did Jesus. Surely we can forgive others who have been done something to us.
